Day three of the 2025 NFL Combine is in the books and the Detroit Lions have been showing some heavy interest in a position that you might not think they’d have heavy interest in. That’s the tight end spot.
The Lions obviously have Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright at the moment and that seems good to go, but the Lions may be looking to get more out of their tight ends going forward with bringing in John Morton and Tyler Roehl. When we say more, we mean more blocking and we also mean more pass catching too. Don’t worry about that.
The Lions have had confirmed formal meetings with Alabama’s C.J. Dippre, Nebraska’s Thomas Fidone and Georgia Tech’s Jackson Hawes. They also met with Alabama’s Robbie Outz, but a formal meeting was not confirmed there.
The one thing that all of these guys talked about was bringing in violence. These guys want to go out there and hit someone and hit them hard.
Hawes, for example, said that he was looking to punish people and that he wanted to put his facemask under someone’s chin. That is Dan Campbell football all day long. Campbell is constantly preaching violence.
A lot of these guys do have some pass catching ability, but they’re much more leaned into the blocking side of things. So if you’re hoping the Lions might have two tight end sets with both guys being receivers, they could do it, but it might not be their first move.
This will largely be about run blocking and that was an area where both LaPorta and Wright have struggled in the last two years. The Lions’ hires really point to the team really leaning into running a lot and having guys that can block is big.
