We are just a handful of weeks away from free agency and the Detroit Lions are one of the teams that everyone is looking at to potentially make a splash move. Whether that’s signing someone or multiple someones in free agency or making the big Myles Garrett trade, it feels like something is coming for the Lions.
The good news is that the Lions were already in a pretty good spot to make a move since they’re currently slated to have the 10th most cap space in the league according to Over the Cap. The even better news is that the NFL just essentially gave the Lions more money to work with.
That is a very large increase in the cap. Much bigger than OTC’s projected increase of $255.4 million to $272.5 million. This will increase the Lions’ cap space by quite a bit. It’s projected to be $44,854,933. If this thing ends up on the larger end, the Lions will be up over $50 million. OTC has already switched its projection to $51,854,933 for the Lions.
This will give the Lions the extra money they need to go out and make a splash move and sign other players while working on a large extension for Kerby Joseph and possibly Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams too.
This move also helps the Lions have a better chance of not having to have cap casualties and keep guys like Graham Glasgow and Za’Darius Smith.
It’s getting even harder to believe that cap issues are a real thing for teams. There’s a real chance this thing could be up to $300 million by the time the Lions need to get Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch signed on new deals. It could be a billion dollars someday and we all might live to see it.
