Lions hiring former Stanford head coach David Shaw is a show of their dedication to innovation on offense, a sign they’ve lost another coach and won’t hire a popular one

The Detroit Lions are back in the hiring news again. They have hired former Standford head coach and current Broncos senior personal director David Shaw to be their passing game coordinator.

Right off the bat, this likely means a few things. Tanner Engstrand is no longer with the Lions. There’s a lot of noise around the idea that he might be the Jets’ new offensive coordinator, but nothing is officially there at this time.

There was some hope and thought the Lions may hire for Detroit quarterback David Blough to be in this role, but that is not going to happen. It doesn’t mean there isn’t a possibility the Lions hire him for another role. It just won’t be this one.

The last part is that the Bears were interested in bringing him in. He interviewed for their offensive coordinator job and didn’t get it. So there’s some payback involved now maybe?

This is a big hire for the Lions. Shaw is someone that should have been an NFL coach by now. He has consistently been touted for his innovative offensive mind and has worked with just about every position there is on the offense.

His biggest claim to fame was being Standford’s offensive coordinator and head coach during the rise of Andrew Luck. He played a big role in making Luck the first overall pick in 2012.

Shaw spent the last year working with new Lions offensive coordinator John Morton in Denver. For as much us being made about the Lions’ brain drain, there has to be a lot of excitement around this staff that the Lions are building around Jared Goff and company. This is a major move for Detroit.
