Lions are reportedly expected to be interested in Calais Campbell and could put in waiver claim upon release from Dolphins

A story basically every Detroit Lions fan has been following in the last week is what is going to happen with Calais Campbell and the Miami Dolphins.

At this point, the story is that the Dolphins plan to waive the former All-Pro defensive tackle if and when they are eliminated from playoff contention. This would allow the 38-year-old to sign with a contender and have one more shot at a Super Bowl.

Since the NFL’s trade deadline has passed, all players, regardless of veteran status, are subject to waivers. So Campbell will have to hit the waiver wire first.

We now know that the Lions are expected to be interested in Campbell and could put in a waiver claim on him per Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald. The Dolphins beat writer had this to say:

“The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings are also expected to be interested, and might put in a waiver claim to strengthen their cause, and prevent a front runner like the Chiefs from adding the defensive lineman who ranks third in active sacks.”

As you can see, Kelly mentioned the Vikings and Chiefs as other destinations as well. The Vikings are one spot above the Lions on the waiver wire, so if they are really interested, they can skip right ahead of the Lions and take him. If they don’t, maybe there’s a chance.

We’ll have to see what happens. Before the Lions or any other team has a shot at Campbell, they have to wait for the Dolphins to be eliminated from playoff contention. That can happen on Sunday with a loss to the Browns. Looks like there’s a really good possibility of that happening.
