Studs and Duds from the Lions Week 16 win over the Bears

USA Today

Week 16 saw the Detroit Lions get back on the winning track with a 34-17 win in Chicago over the Bears. Beating a division rival to improve to 13-2 made for a great start to the Christmas week for the Lions, who still have not lost on the road in 2024.

Several Lions players stepped up in the victory. Alas, it wasn’t a great game from everyone, though even one of the duds still had some positive moments.

Here are the studs and duds from the Lions win over the Bears.

Stud: Jared Goff

Goff had an outstanding game in the cold Chicago outdoors. He threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Lions on six scoring drives in their first seven possessions. At least three of his nine incomplete passes were deliberate misses to avoid a negative play, as well.

The cheeky fake fumble/TD throw to Sam LaPorta was expertly executed by Goff, showing his ability to get over on the overzealous Bears defense. No. 16 was in firm control all game long.

Dud: Ezekiel Turner

Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet (85) gets past Lions defense to score a touchdown at Soldier Field during a game against the Chicago Bears at in Chicago, Ill., on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024.

Against Green Bay, Turner made quite a positive splash in limited duty as a high-energy off-ball linebacker. He struggled quite a bit in the Week 15 loss to the Bills, so this game in Chicago was the rubber match on his first three games.

It did not go well for Turner, unfortunately.

From grossly overrunning an early run assignment to getting roasted by TE Cole Kmet on Chicago’s first touchdown, Turner was ineffective in his 20-plus snaps. He failed to record a tackle in the game.

Stud: Jahmyr Gibbs

Gibbs had himself a day as a solo artist. With running mate David Montgomery out with a knee injury, Gibbs blazed, spun and dodged his way to 109 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also caught four passes on five targets, adding 45 more yards from scrimmage. Gibbs broke several tackles along the way to the big game.

Stud: Jameson Williams

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams (9) makes a catch and runs for a touchdown against Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens (36) during the first half at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024.

Jamo went off for the biggest game of his three-year career. Chicago had no answers for the speedy Williams, who caught five passes for a career-high 153 yards and a touchdown.

To compare to Williams’ last game against Chicago, he caught the same amount of passes but netted 125 more yards than he posted on Thanksgiving. Williams also contributed some solid run blocking as well.

Dud: Terrion Arnold

It wasn’t a terrible day for the first-round rookie, but his inexperience showed in Chicago’s second touchdown. Veteran wideout Keenan Allen hooked Arnold in with an excellent fake, and it allowed a window for Caleb Williams to hit Allen in stride before safety Ifeatu Melifonwu had any chance to close in help.

Arnold later got beaten for a big 4th-down reception by Allen, then again on the very next play, ceding another one for being a little too far off in zone coverage. It was a tough assignment for Arnold and it led to a day that wasn’t his best. Arnold still performed very well in run support and did notch a pass breakup in the end zone in a picture-perfect coverage rep, too.

Stud: Jack Campbell

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell (46) tackles Chicago Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen (13) during the second half at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024.

What a game from the man in the middle of Detroit’s defense! Campbell turned in one of his most impressive all-around outings despite an ever-shifting lineup all around him.

Against the Bears talented skill position players, Campbell was a bedrock presence in both run support and coverage, quickly and effectively terminating any and every play near him. With a tip of the hat to the defensive line in front of him, Campbell did a fantastic job of staying clear from blocks and making life difficult for Caleb Williams.

Stud: Frank Ragnow

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) talks to teammates before a snap during the first half at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024.

Ragnow had a rough game against Buffalo and took out his frustrations on the Bears. The All-Pro center was a wrecking crew all on his own in the run game. His quickness to the point of attack and ability to strongly seal open creases for Gibbs stood out. So did his snowplowing through the secondary in leading the charge on an early screen pass.

Playing with rookie left guard Christian Mahogany making his first start, Ragnow was at his best. Mahogany’s debut was also worthy of praise despite a late penalty. Great rebound by the Lions interior offensive line.
