David Montgomery gives hope to Detroit Lions fans when asked if he could play again this season

The Detroit Lions have been hit by a tsunami of injuries this season, but Dan Campbell’s unit might have a reason to hope.

The Detroit Lions already have created history. Dan Campbell’s unit has already locked in a third consecutive winning season since the 1990s and the second consecutive 12-win season in Lions history.

However, the team hasn’t been invincible. Despite winning the contest, quarterback Jared Goff threw five interceptions against the Houston Texans earlier this season. His team also has lost Aiden Hutchinson for most if not all of 2024.

Put simply, Campbell’s often-spotlighted team is under the microscope for better or worse. With the injuries piling on top of the criticism, the Lions are hungry for some good news. They might have it.

Lions star muddles timeline

According to Pro Football Talk, speaking to reporters, Lions running back David Montgomery refused to declare his season over.

Montgomery has not been placed on injured reserve, and he said in a video posted on the Lions’ social media that nothing is official just yet.

“‘We don’t know. We’re kind of working through the logistics right now. Things may change,”’ Montgomery said.

Asked if there’s a chance he could play again this season, Montgomery answered, ‘I hope so.’”

At least for now, Montgomery has been labeled with a knee injury that may or may not need surgery. It appears that if it does, his season would be over. However, if it doesn’t he has a chance to return in the playoffs. According to USA Today, the running back has sought out two opinions with one more to come.

Of course, one then needs to ask if two doctors say he needs surgery but one doesn’t, which side is wrong? The running back clearly wants to get back to the game regardless.

David Montgomery’s injury paves way for additional work for season-long handcuff

Even if David Montgomery does find a way back in time for the playoffs, it still leaves the Lions with a question of how to manage the snaps for Jahmyr Gibbs. At first glance, it makes sense to give him everything considering he has been explosive all season long, earning 1047 yards and 11 touchdowns, per Pro Football Reference.

However, with the added workload and considering the team’s already scroll-sized injury report, the Lions might be playing with fire. That said, they may feel they have no choice with the number one seed on the line. Will the Lions ride with Gibbs?
