The Detroit Lions made a lot of moves at cornerback this offseason. They went out and got Terrion Arnold, Carlton Davis, Amik Robertson and Ennis Rakestraw. So far all these guys have played well and the new cornerback room is looking like a success as it has grown together. The problem is now there’s some injuries. Davis is out for an undisclosed amount of time, Arnold looks to be coming off the report and Rakestraw is currently on injured reserve
There is some concern after Kindle Vildor’s rough game on Sunday that the Lions might be in trouble against a better quarterback if they can’t get Carlton Davis back faster. The team does have Emmanuel Moseley, but he just played for essentially the first time since 2022 last weekend.
There is some help out there and it can come from a guy that knows the system and the staff pretty well. In fact he’s a former starter here. We’re talking about Jerry Jacobs.
2023 did not go his way at all. We learned that Jacobs being a starter might not be something that he can do at this time. The Lions put him on the bench late in the season and then he suffered a season ending injury right before the playoffs.
He had a shot with the Rams this summer, but an injury after the first preseason game ended his summer. Jacobs is a free agent now and here’s an opportunity for him to get back on his feet.
He might not be a starter at this juncture, but he’s proved to be a good rotational player that can come off the bench. Here’s a shot for him to find his way back on the roster for a couple games as an elevated player and we’ll see what happens.
The Lions will continue to shift their practice squad around all year like they have in past years, so there will be a spot open at some point. We’ll see if they ever consider going this route soon. It likely won’t be for Thanksgiving, but it could be afterwards is Davis’ injury is a longer term one.
There are some team’s out there that are showing interest in Jacobs. He tried out for the Commanders on Tuesday.
