The NFL trade deadline is right around the corner, Tuesday, Nov. 5, to be exact, and pundits across the country are making last-minute pitches on how teams should deal with certain players.
One former general manager made a head-scratching proposal on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Friday.
Mike Tannenbaum suggested the Detroit Lions should acquire Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett to address the hole left by the injured Aidan Hutchinson.
While Garrett would certainly fill Detroit’s critical hole on defense, he would naturally cost a pretty penny. That’s where Tannenbaum’s proposal got so wacky even co-host Ryan Clark walked off the set.
Tannenbaum said Detroit should offer up star running back Jahmyr Gibbs, three first-round picks and a second-round pick. Yes, you read that correctly.
“This team is good enough to win without making that type of change,” Clark rebutted to Tannenbaum. “I do think they need to go out and get another [pass] rusher.”
Detroit drafted Gibbs 12th overall in 2023, so parting with the team’s leading rusher so early is just the beginning of the obvious issues with this proposal.
Arguably, Garrett isn’t even worth three first-round selections in the first place, given he’s only 25th in sacks and not even top 50 in total tackles. Plus, Cleveland doesn’t need a running back with Nick Chubb healthy again, and backup Jerome Ford is in serviceable condition when healthy.
The rest of the “Get Up” panel suggested a more reasonable (and cheaper) trade between the two teams would be for Detroit to acquire Za’Darius Smith instead.
There are just four more days until the trade deadline, so the takes will only get hotter as the rumors swirl online.
