The Giants sign away the Lions’ practice squad kicker

Greg Joseph, we hardly knew ye…

Technically, no one in Detroit outside of the Lions themselves really knew Joseph in his brief stay with the team. The Lions signed Joseph, a veteran kicker, to the practice squad just last Wednesday.

Now, Joseph is heading to New York.

The Giants are signing away Joseph from Detroit’s practice squad to their active 53-man roster. New York came up with a dire need after regular kicker Graham Gano injured his hamstring on the opening kickoff in New York’s 21-18 loss to Washington, a game in which the Commanders kicked a franchise-record seven field goals (all by one-time Lions kicker Austin Seibert).

For the Lions, first-year kicker Jake Bates remains perfect on the season in all placekicks and also has booted eight touchbacks in nine kickoffs.

Detroit now has one opening on the practice squad. Tuesday tends to be the day when the Lions work out potential signees, so that spot might not stay open for long.
