Welcome everyone to this weeks Monday Overreaction. The Detroit Lions lost a hard one on Sunday and there is no doubt that Jared Goff had a bad game. He threw two picks and and just looked out of sorts. He wasn’t too good in Week 1 either.
This prompted a couple of complaints from Lions fans after Sunday’s game. The first one was that the Lions paid him all this money and that was a mistake. The second one was that it’s time for the Lions to just move on and start Hooker.
Both are bad takes, but the Hooker one is just insane. Here’s why:
For starters, Hooker has barely played NFL football. He had his first OTA’s, first minicamp and first training camp this offseason. He played three preseason games and he was just ok against second, third and fourth string guys.
The Lions were unsure that he was going to be their backup quarterback going into the final week of camp. They essentially made that decision on the last day. He’s not ready to be starter right now and it’s going to be a while before he is. There’s so much for him to cleanup this season.
The next thing is that these games don’t mean Goff is bad. We saw Goff go on a three game bad stretch last year and then come out of that with monster games the rest of the way and into the playoffs. This is the guy that the stadium keeps chanting for like he’s in the WWE or something.
The response from some fans is the same as it was last year and that was to overreact. The house was on fire and Goff was the reason for it and there’s no way the team should pay this guy. Then he just proved everyone wrong. He did it in 2021 and 2022 as well. It’s the same old story over and over again with him and the fans.
We’re not excusing Goff. He needs to be better and he needs to do it starting next week in Arizona against the Cardinals. But to want to make a chance already with the knowledge that this guy just keeps bouncing back is insane.
