And that’s that. The Detroit Lions had their final training camp practice on Wednesday. At least the the last one that the media has access to anyways. It was a very newsworthy one too. Let’s get into our observations from the day:
Penei Sewell’s injury is a major problem
Sewell went down with an injury during a rep and left practice. The Lions say he’s being evaluated for a foot injury. We’ll get you more info as soon as it’s available.
Colby Sorsdal came in to replace Sewell and it was instantly a problem. Sorsdal allowed Hutchinson to beat him for a sack and Jared Goff was much more crowded in the pocket than usual. With Kevin Zietler also out, the Lions are missing their entire right side of the line.
A bad day for Jared Goff
This was the clunkiest day I’ve seen from Goff this summer. This was all before the Sewell injury too. Goff threw two interceptions on the day. One to Carlton Davis that turned into a pick six and the other to Alex Anzalone who tipped a pass up in the air and then caught it.
Other than that, Goff had a lot of low throws that were either at guys feet or overthrown. He was just off. He did have a nice little chest pass type throw for a 2-yard touchdown to Kalif Raymond. He kind of had the ball navigating through the middle of red zone traffic. It looked good.
An even worse day for Hooker
Hooker had a fumble on a scramble where the ball just fell out of his hands and then he had two botched snaps where the ball came out of his hands and he had to go down and get it off the ground and continue the play. Both plays lost yardage.
Hooker also threw an interception to Chelan Garnes when he threw a pass a little too high and Steven Gilmore was able to tip it. He did have some good throws when he was able to settle in, but it was an otherwise rough day.
Defensive line had themselves a day
Again, this is before Sewell went down. Aidan Hutchinson had the sack against Sorsdal, but that wasn’t his only trip into the backfield. He got around the offensive line early and flew up in the air to bat down a Jared Goff pass. Alim McNeill also had a batted down pass at the line.
Marcus Davenport also got a sack on Goff and the line shut down the run game all day. Sione Vaki had the only good looking run of the day and it wasn’t for much.
Craig Reynolds injury
Reynolds also got hurt on Wednesday. He’s being evaluated for a lower body injury per the Lions.
Jake Bates has a few misses in the wind
We didn’t see a ton of Bates on Wednesday, but he looked good for the part. There were some misses though. Bates missed wide right from 48-yards out. The other miss was a PAT. Otherwise he looks much improved in the last two weeks.
It’s so noisy out here
The Lions brought in artificial crowd noise on Wednesday. It sounded like a jet engine and the closer the speaker got to you, the more you could not hear yourself think. It’s cool to watch stuff like that.
Emptying the notebook
- Kindle Vildor had another nice day that was highlighted by a nice tackle for loss on Amon-Ra St. Brown. He practically met St. Brown at the catch point.
- St Brown juked Brian Branch near the sideline in a moment that had everyone saying “ooh.” By the way, if a catch was being made buy the first team on Wednesday, it was mostly St. Brown.
- No shock here, Kalif Raymond had the most success on return duty for both kicks and punts. We already know he’s the punt returner, but he might net the other job too.
