Don’t expect Lions starters to play in preseason opener vs. Giants

The Detroit Lions will open the 2024 preseason on Thursday night in New York against the Giants. The game won’t feature many players that most fans associate as the Lions, however.

Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed before Tuesday’s practice in New York that the established players on the team won’t be seen on the field on Thursday night. It’s all about the young players and the battles for the depth positions across the Lions roster.

“Certainly some of the guys we know we’re going to count on during the season, I don’t see them necessarily playing and if they do, not very many reps,” Campbell said. “But our young guys are going to get a lot of these, and developmental players are going to get a ton of these reps.”

When asked specifically about quarterback Jared Goff, Campbell was clear,

“I don’t see Goff playing in this one.”

After two days of joint practices marred by several fights, Campbell might be even less inclined to give even limited reps to players like Jameson Williams, Carlton Davis or Taylor Decker.
