Practice squad pickup from last season is on the verge of doing the unthinkable with the Lions

It’s one of those things that’s burned into your brain. I’ll never forget it for some reason. When the Detroit Lions brought in receiver Daurice Fountain to be a part of their practice squad last year, Bears reporter Jeff Berckes reached out to me to tell me that there was something there with him.

I honestly didn’t think anything of it, but nowadays I’m thinking about it a lot. That’s becasue Fountain is coming out of nowhere and challenging for a starting spot right now as the team’s WR3. How? It’s because he just keeps making plays. Even Dan Campbell is noticing it.

“Fountain makes plays. He’s making some plays. Like you see the one on one, he makes a big high catch. I think we all are intrigued by Fountain. And I said that a few days ago, we need to see more out of him. We need to see more. It’s got to show up. He needs to be detailed in everything he does, man he’s got an unbelievable opportunity here and he knows that. We got to see it.”

That unbelievable opportunity is one he’s never really had. He was a fifth-round pick by the Colts in 2018 and he’s had stops with the Bears and Chiefs along the way. He’s only been able to log two regular season catches in his entire career and now he has a very real shot to make the Lion 53-man roster and be a starter.

Stuff like that does not happen every day. Especially for a 28-year old receiver. He is someone to keep your eyes on as camp goes along and he needs to have a big preseason too. This could be his moment.
