The Lions on Thursday signed first-round choice Terrion Arnold, their last remaining unsigned pick.
The No. 24 pick in April’s draft, Arnold’s slotted four-year contract is worth $14.344 million and includes a $7.252 million signing bonus, according to OverTheCap.com.
One of the many moves the Detroit Lions made at the cornerback position this year was the signing of Amik Robertson, who comes from the Las Vegas Raiders after spending four seasons with the team.
A former fourth-round pick of the Raiders in 2020, Robertson had his best year in coverage in 2023, posting career-bests in completion rate (59.1%) and passer rating allowed (87.4) while playing the vast majority of his snaps on the boundary.
In Detroit, Robertson is trying to carve out a role for himself, whether that be on the outside or in the slot. But the slot figures to be a better bet right now, as Terrion Arnold looks primed to start outside opposite Carlton Davis.
Robertson has been getting looks in the slot due to Brian Branch’s absence because of offseason surgery, and there’s a chance Detroit decides to move Branch to safety, or at least play him there more, something the team is considering. That would be huge for Robertson, as he figures to be the favorite to play there when Branch isn’t.
Jared Goff isn’t old enough to be Terrion Arnold’s father, but the age gap between the two Detroit Lions players is significant enough that the quarterback could have been the rookie corner’s babysitter a dozen years earlier.
