Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is in the early days of the final year of his contract, but he made it known while speaking with reporters on Tuesday that he wants to stay put beyond the upcoming season.
“It’s been amazing,” Goff said about his Detroit tenure that officially began in March 2021, according to Eric Woodyard of ESPN. “I love it here and would love to be here for a long time. It’s been really special, playing in front of these fans and being able to provide a winning culture in the last year and a half or so and see them experience that and be able to be a part of that has been fun. But by no means are we satisfied or happy to be here or any of that. It’s about what’s next now.”
Goff’s presence and performances became vital for the 2023 Lions team that matched and even exceeded expectations en route to completing a trip to the NFC Championship Game.
As shared by ESPN stats, he finished this past regular season ranked 11th among qualified players with a 60.3 adjusted QBR, second with 4,575 passing yards and fourth with 30 passing touchdowns.
Per Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ website, head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged in March that getting an extension done with Goff before Week One of the 2024 season is a top priority for the organization.
On Tuesday, Goff insisted he trusts his agent and Lions general manager Brad Holmes regarding contract discussions.
“The last three years have really been fun,” Goff added about a run that included guiding the Lions to their first playoff victory since January 1992. “Not always easy, but fun and hard. And I’ve been surrounded by a lot of good teammates and coaches that have helped me realize some of my potential and hopefully, there’s a lot more there. But, I’ve had a ton of fun winning in this city and winning for these fans.”
Goff noted that he has “grown mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually … all that” since the day he was traded by the Los Angeles Rams to Detroit over three years ago.
Such growth is one reason DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Lions tied for fourth among the betting favorites at +1200 odds to win Super Bowl LIX in February 2025 as of late Tuesday afternoon.
