Breaking down the NFLPA’s report card for the Detroit Lions

The NFLPA conducted a broad polling of its player constituency for the second year in a row. The player’s union published the report card for all 32 teams based on the 2023 player survey.

Detroit fared better in the 2023 survey and grading than the Lions did in 2022, the first year of the initiative launched by NFLPA president JC Tretter.

Breaking down some of the individual categories, the Lions showed some improvement.

The training staff ranked 12th, but that’s a big step forward from last year’s No. 22 ranking. The Lions overhauled the training staff, and the reception to the changes has been very good. From the report,

“The training staff is new this year and the players feel the training care is much improved. They report much more individualized care this season compared to last year.”

Food service and nutrition also spiked up from 29th to 19th, and the players noted positive changes here as well.

    • The majority of returning players feel that this category saw improvement from last year 

    • Players mention better freshness, healthier options, better taste, higher quality and great work from staff 

    • Players would like to see even more variety in the types of foods offered going into next year

There is still work to be done with the nutritionist position, where the Lions continue to rank near the bottom at 25th overall. The lack of an individualized nutrition program was a common complaint.

Detroit’s best grade is head coach, where Dan Campbell got an A+ grade.
