Detroit Lions 2023-24 moon stats

The funny thing is that I am not an astrology guy. Really, my wife would be so much better at this type of thing than I would. This is all in response to a Jay Cuda tweet on the eve of Thanksgiving that said the Lions had never won a game on Thanksgiving when there’s a waxing gibbous moon. Lions fans began to hate the moon after that. I’m sure they love the moon today though.

With all this moon talk going on, I decided to do a little more research and put together a few moon stats that relates to this seasons Lions. Enjoy.

Records against the moon

I know Lions fans are afraid of waxing gibbous after the Thanksgiving loss, but that scenario was tied exclusively to Thanksgiving. The Lions are actually 3-1 on waxing gibbous days. They even won their first NFC North championship on a waxing gibbous day.

The Lions are 2-2 on wanning crescent days. Their loss to the Bears and the Cowboys came on those days. They did beat the Chiefs in Week 1 though.

The Lions are 4-1 on waxing crescent days. That’s the moon you want to see the most. That’s win over the Bucs, the comeback against the Bears, the beatdown on the Broncos and, of course, their playoff win against the Rams. The one loss was the overtime loss to the Seahawks in Week 2.

Playoff Moon

So here’s the thing. The Lions have only been to the divisional round of the playoffs once. That was that Waxing Crescent against the Cowboys in 1991. So here’s how we’ll do it. What was the moon phase the last time the Lions played a second playoff game?

It was a first quarter moon when the Lions got demolished by the Commanders in the NFC Championship game. You’ll be happy to know that there isn’t going to be a first quarter moon on a day where the Lions play this postseason.

Future Moon

If the Lions beat the Bucs on Sunday and head to the NFC Championship game, they’ll play on a day with a wanning gibbous moon. The Lions are 2-0 on those days.

If they make it to the Super Bowl, the moon phase for that game will be a waxing crescent. The one where the Lions are 4-1 on.
