Report: The Lions aren’t expected to extend Goff during season

The Detroit Lions have themselves a very good quarterback in Jared Goff. Right now he’s Pro Football Focus’s highest graded quarterback in the entire NFL. So much for that talk of him being a bridge quarterback right? The Lions have their man with Goff and he should be their man for a long while.

The one thing standing in the way of that is that Goff has one year left on his contract and he’s expected to get a very big extension that will make him one of the leagues highest paid players. Don’t expect that deal to come this season though. ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler is reporting that the Lions and Goff won’t be doing a deal right away.

“Goff and the Lions have had talks about the future, but no deal is in the works during the season. In the offseason, however, the Lions will likely up their efforts to secure Goff’s long-term future. He’s only 29, and the Lions know asking Goff to play the final year of his current deal is untenable.”

This is somewhat to be expected. Quarterback extensions can come during the season at times. Joe Burrow just got his at the start of the season. But, more often than not, a deal will get done in the offseason.

This is at the tippy top of things to do for the Lions this offseason. Don’t be surprised if a deal is worked out pretty fast due to nature of the relationship between Goff and the Lions. That doesn’t mean there will be a hometown discount though. Goff is going to get paid for sure.
