Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. has announced that he will be stepping away from football to take care of personal family matters. Jones’ statement was released on Tuesday saying that he will not be with the team until further notice. This news comes from NFL insider and analyst Adam Schefter via Twitter.

The wide receiver had this to say in his statement:

“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford family, the city of Detroit, my teammates, and coaches. To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters. Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar.”

“This organization has been amazing showing love and support for myself and my family over the years and this time is no different. For that I am appreciative. To my brothers and coaches, I will be rooting for you every step of the way! This is the year! Go get it!!!”

Detroit Lions Career

Over his 12-year career in the NFL, Jones has amounted to 7,421 receiving yards and 58 touchdowns. He has played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Detroit Lions. This season, he has gone for just 35 yards receiving and five catches. He has been slowly declining in production the last few years and has looked as if he may retire soon.

As far as how much time the veteran receiver will miss, it remains unknown for now. From the sound of it, it seems like he will not be returning to the sport and he will be retiring as a Detroit Lion. Best wishes and prayers are sent out to Jones and his entire family.

Update: The Lions have now officially released Jones.
