NFL Week 7 losers: Bills defense comes up small, Jared Goff disappoints

With nearly all of the Week 7 games in the books, here’s a look at some of the biggest losers from around the NFL.

Buffalo Bills defense: QB Josh Allen and the Bills offense may have waited three quarters to show up Sunday, but their defense was non-existent virtually the entire game against the New England Patriots. Buffalo’s D allowed a Patriots offense averaging 12 points a game to put 29 on the scoreboard in a brutal four-point loss.

New England scored on three of their first four possessions, and Buffalo forced them to punt only twice in the second half. Meanwhile, the Patriots’ fledgling QB Mac Jones looked like an All-Pro, completing 83.3 percent of his passes (25-of-30) for 272 yards (9.1) with two touchdowns, zero interceptions and a robust 126.7 passer rating.

The unit won’t have much time to rest up as a matchup with QB Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Thursday Night Football” is right around the corner.

Jared Goff, quarterback, Detroit Lions: After looking like a darkhorse MVP candidate through the first six weeks of 2023, Goff looked very mortal against a tough Baltimore Ravens defense in a blowout loss, 38-6. Goff had easily his worst day of the season, going 33-of-53 for 284 yards and an interception.

The Ravens harassed Goff all day, pressuring him 16 times and posting five sacks. When pressured, Goff crumbled, finishing 8-of-16 for 82 yards and an interception while recording a dreadful 39.1 passer rating. Goff had taken only 10 sacks entering Week 7 and will now have to regroup ahead of a “Monday Night Football” contest against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8.

Jordan Love, quarterback, Green Bay Packers: Despite going up against a Denver Broncos squad ranked last in points allowed, Love led a Packers offense that was shut out in the first half and managed only 17 points by game’s end. Furthermore, with the game in the balance, a late interception sealed a two-point Packers loss.
