Detroit Lions to nab WR Denzel Mims in trade with New York Jets

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Lions are in talks to acquire wide receiver Denzel Mims from the New York Jets and a deal is expected to be completed Thursday, a person familiar with the trade told the Free Press.

Mims, a second-round pick in 2020, requested a trade last year but languished on the Jets roster all season. The Jets reportedly informed him he would be released if a trade partner could not be found this week.

Mims had 42 catches for 676 yards and no touchdowns in three seasons in New York. He appeared in 10 games and caught 11 passes last year, but could help a Lions receiving corps this fall that will be without Jameson Williams for the first six games of the regular season.

The Lions return leading receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, but have question marks throughout the rest of the unit.

Williams, the 12th pick of last year’s draft, missed most of last season while recovering from a torn ACL and is out until late October because of a gambling suspension. Josh Reynolds, who has had one season with more than 40 catches in his six-year career, currently projects as the Lions’ No. 2 receiver. And veteran Marvin Jones, in his second stint with the franchise, and rookie seventh-round pick Antoine Green are among others vying for playing time.

According to NFL Network, the Lions are expected to trade a conditional sixth-round pick to the Jets for Mims and a seventh-rounder.
