Detroit Lions, still in need of pass rush help, to host Arden Key on free agent visit

Detroit Free Press

The first wave of NFL free agency is done, but the Detroit Lions are still in the market for some veteran roster additions.

The Lions are hosting pass rusher Arden Key on a free agent visit, NFL Network reported Monday.

Key had a career-high 6½ sacks last season with the San Francisco 49ers after registering a total of three sacks in his first three NFL seasons.

The Lions re-signed defensive end Charles Harris to a two-year deal last week, but still have questions at the defensive end position.

Romeo Okwara, the team’s sack leader in 2020, is rehabbing from a torn Achilles tendon and likely out until sometime in training camp, and backups Julian Okwara and Austin Bryant have 9½ career sacks between them.

This year’s draft is considered strong at the edge rush position position, and the Lions have three of the first 34 picks. General manager Brad Holmes and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn met with Aidan Hutchinson, a likely top-three pick, at Michigan’s pro day last week, and Hutchinson will visit Allen Park for local day in April.

Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux, Georgia’s Travon Walker and Florida State’s Jermaine Johnson are other potential top-10 picks.

The Lions have been relatively quiet in free agency this spring, adding two players who were not on their 2021 roster: Receiver D.J. Chark and tight end Garrett Griffin.

Griffin will not finalize his deal until late March, after he completes his annual two-week offseason commitment to the Air Force.
