Students at Davison Elementary-Middle School in Detroit got books and school supplies Tuesday afternoon from Lions fullback Jason Cabinda.
Cabinda said he wanted to do something for the students after virtually visiting with a group of them last year. Cabinda’s mom has been an educator for more than 25 years. He bought books for the 800-plus students to take home and keep.
“I know it’s been a really tough time for them not being in the classrooms for over a year,” Cabinda said. “I plan to show up on their first day of school to encourage them to read, learn and overcome any challenges they may have faced.”

The program also was supported by the Ford Motor Co. Fund, Athletes for Charity and other donors. Volunteers from Ford cheered the students on. Students who have 100% attendance will earn the Jason Cabinda Attendance Award.
The books were about science, engineering, NASA, George Washington Carver and — who else? — Henry Ford.
