Detroit Lions sign QB David Blough, long snapper Steve Wirtel to practice squad

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Lions made tough decisions at long snapper and punter Saturday, but the competition for those spots isn’t over yet.

The Lions re-signed long snapper Steve Wirtel and punter Arryn Siposs to their practice Sunday, a day after both were waived as part of the cut down to 53 players.

Don Muhlbach edged Wirtel for the long snapper job, and Jack Fox beat out Siposs to be the Lions punter.

In all, the Lions signed 16 players to their practice squad, every one of which was previously on their roster.

On offense, the Lions signed quarterback David Blough, running back Jonathan Williams, tight end Isaac Nauta, wide receivers Tom Kennedy and Victor Bolden, and offensive linemen Beau Benzschawel and Kenny Wiggins to the practice squad.

Wiggins has five accrued NFL seasons, but it eligible for the practice squad under new rules put in place this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

On defense, the Lions signed defensive linemen Frank Herron, Kevin Strong and Jonathan Wynn, linebacker Anthony Pittman, cornerback Dee Virgin and safeties Jalen Elliott and Bobby Price for their practice squad.

The Lions also re-signed guard Oday Aboushi to the 53-man roster.

The team has two roster moves to make to clear room for Aboushi and running back Adrian Peterson. Rookie tight end Hunter Bryant (hamstring) is expected to go on injured reserve to open one roster spot.
