The Detroit Lions are reportedly headed towards a tough decision to make for their roster, entering the new league year.

According to Tom Pelissero, Detroit plans to release former All-Pro LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin when the new league years begins.

Reeves-Maybin has been a notable piece of the special teams unit in Detroit for quite some time, and most of his usage last season came in that department. He did finish the season taking some important defensive snaps at LB due to injuries, though.

The veteran linebacker became a fan favorite in recent years and was a captain in 2024 for Dan Campbell’s squad.

This decision will end his second stint with the Lions, after being drafted by them in 2017.

With the move, the Lions will create just under $2 million of cap space but take on $2.75M in dead money. Detroit has a lot of decisions to make when it comes to extensions this offseason, and moves in free agency will be on the table as well.

Managing their money and roster space will be a challenge for GM Brad Holmes and co., but there should be no doubt about their commitment to continuing to improve and compete for a Super Bowl.
