The NFL hasn’t yet set the salary cap for the upcoming 2025 season, but a report from ESPN’s Dan Graziano indicates that the figure will be some $25 million higher than it was in 2024. It’s a much higher bump than has been widely projected, meaning teams will likely have more cap room to work with than originally anticipated.
The exact cap figures should be finalized in the coming days, with the NFL Scouting Combine coming next week and closely followed by the onset of free agency. Most of the initial free agent negotiations take place during the combine in Indianapolis, aside from the scouting aspects of the event.
The Detroit Lions come in fifth in the NFC in available cap room in the updated cap projections, per the 33rd Team. Detroit cracks the top 10 among the 32 NFL teams at the 10 spot.
Keep in mind that Detroit has some key players (Kerby Joseph, Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams) who can get contract extensions this offseason, so not all of that money is available to spend on free agents.
