What the Detroit Lions 2025 coaching staff looks like so far, who’s switching positions and where the new guys are slotting in

Yardbarker

The Detroit Lions lost a lot of coaches this offseason and it has caused them to have to go out and reload with new guys. So far they’ve made a bunch of different hires and with all these racking up, it’s getting hard to keep track of.

So here’s a layout of what the staff is looking like right now and where some of the new guys are going to be coaching as well as what roles are still open.

Offense

Role Coach Replacing

Offensive coordinator

John Morton

Ben Johnson

Assistant head coach/recievers coach

Scottie Montgomery

Antwaan Randle El

Passing game coordinator

David Shaw

Tanner Engstrand

Running backs coach

Tashard Choice

Scottie Montgomery

Tight Ends coach

Tyler Roehl

Steve Heiden

Offensive line coach/run game coordinator

Hank Fraley

Quarterbacks coach

Mark Brunell

Ok, so we learned that Montgomery is staying on as the Lions’ assistant head coach and that he will be taking over the receivers coach job now that Randle El is in Chicago. We also learned that Roehl, who coached tight ends at North Dakota State, will be the Lions’ new tight ends coach.

Let’s take a look at the offensive assistants:

Role Coach Replacing

Assistant quarterbacks coach

Unknown/ Possiblly Bruce Gradkowski

J.T. Barrett

Assistant receivers coach

Seth Ryan

Assistant offensive line coach

Steve Oliver

Really the big one here is the assistant quarterback coach job. It makes all the sense in the world that Gradkowski gets that, but we have not heard anything about it yet, so we can’t report it. We can only speculate.

Defense

Role Coach Replacing

Defensive Coordinator

Kelvin Sheppard

Aaron Glenn

Defenisve Line coach

Kacy Rodgers

Terrell Williams

Linebackers coach

Shaun Dion Hamilton

Kelvin Shepperd

Defensive Backs coach

Deshea Townsend

David Corrao

Defensive assistant

Assistant defensive line coach

Open

Dre Thompson

There’s not a whole lot of change going on for the defense. Most of the staff remains intact. Shepperd and Hamilton both got promoted and Rodgers is in as the defensive line coach. We’re waiting to see who will be hired for the assistant defensive line coach job and the assistant linebackers coach job.

Special teams

Role Coach

Special teams coorindator

Dave Fipp

Assistant special teams coordinator

Jett Modkins

No changes here at all.
