According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz , the Detroit Lions are expected to hire Iowa State assistant head coach and running backs coach Tyler Roehl as an offensive assistant coach.
A native of West Fargo, North Dakota, Roehl spent just one season with the Cyclones after nearly a decade of working with FCS powerhouse North Dakota State. Roehl served as NDSU’s offensive coordinator from 2019-2023 and was the running backs and tight ends coach (2014-18) before that.
Roehl’s lone season in Ames was a special one, as the Cyclones put together their best season in school history. After winning 10 games for the first time ever, Iowa State capped off the season with a 42-41 win over Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, giving them an unprecedented 11-3 record.
One of Roehl’s crowning achievements at ISU was the development of Carson Hansen, who became one of the toughest runners in college football, finishing the year with 752 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore.
This departure is a bit of a surprise for Iowa State, as Roehl is the first assistant to depart Matt Campbell’s staff this offseason, and comes very late in the cycle. He had served a key role in recruiting for ISU in the 2026 cycle, but now the Cyclones will have to pivot to find a replacement.
Iowa State will open up the 2025 college football season against Kansas State in the Aer Lingus College Classic (Dublin, Ireland) on August 23.
