It’s all anyone is going to be talking about for a while now. The Detroit Lions, who were miraculously able to keep their coaching staff together last season are now likely about to lose a lot of coaches. Here’s what we’re keeping an eye on.
That seems like a lot because it is a lot. It’s enough to make you want to get into the fetal position and truly fear that the Lions might be about to go into a deep hole. I get that, but that’s just not what’s about to happen. I know this because we just saw this with a team not too long ago.
The 2018 Rams went to the Super Bowl and came up short and then lost the following guys within the next couple of years.
- Brad Holmes
- Matt LaFluer
- Kevin O’Connell
- Zac Taylor
- Liam Coen
- Ray Agnew
- Shane Waldron
- Thomas Brown
- Brandon Staley
That is a lot of talent and most of it is on the offensive side of the ball. Three of those guys are three of the best head coaches in the NFL right now. Coen is probably about to be a head coach and Waldron and Brown will get their chances at some point. Brown has already been an interim head coach.
The Rams lost all those guys and managed to win a Super Bowl in 2021 despite that. The reason why they did that is because at the end of the day, they still had Sean McVay and they still had Les Snead. They also still had the players and the culture.
The Lions still have Dan Campbell and they still have Brad Holmes. Literally none of what has happened in the last three seasons happens without them. They hired the staff and they found all the players. The players that are still here by the way. They also have that culture too.
I’m not saying everything is going to be easy. The Lions are going to have to hire the right guys and some things are going to have to change, but at the end of the day, they have all the things they need in terms of what’s actually on the field and what the heart of this thing is.
