The Lions have a big vacancy to fill on the coaching staff now that the season is over. That’s because offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is moving on from Detroit to become the new head coach of the Chicago Bears.
The deal is not done yet, but several major NFL insiders are all reporting Johnson has agreed to take over the Bears. He is slated to travel to Chicago and finalize the deal.
Johnson has been one of the hottest head coaching candidates thanks to his two-plus seasons running the Lions offense. His aggressive creativity helped maximize QB Jared Goff and created the NFL’s highest-scoring offense in 2024.
Earlier on Monday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell indicated he expected to lose Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Johnson is the first to depart. Glenn is considered the front-runner for the New York Jets vacancy and has also been strongly connected to the New Orleans Saints.
