Detroit Lions on the verge of bringing back ‘tone-setter’, it will make them twice as dangerous

The return of a familiar face is great news for Detroit Lions fans but unfortunate news for Washington Commanders fans.

The Detroit Lions have been hit with as many injuries as anyone not named the Green Bay Packers in recent weeks. Of course, with the Detroit Lions getting a bye week, they’ve had a rare chance to only rest and repair their roster.

That said, some would argue that Jared Goff having a place in the top 10 quarterbacks for passing yards plus a number one seed would be enough to get the team at least to the Super Bowl.

However, football is a team sport and any addition that can make his job easier should be a welcome one.

Dan Campbell on David Montgomery

Speaking at the podium on January 13, there were many opportunities for the Lions head coach to speak on topics, but he took the time to hype up one piece specifically. Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised David Montgomery as he races back to the gridiron.

‘To me, [David Montgomery], he’s a bellcow. He’s a tone-setter. He’s a catalyst. There’s a place for him.

“There’s a place for him here. So there’ll be a place for him in this game. So it’s going to be good to get him back,” he said.

According to Detroitfootball.net via ESPN, Montgomery is on track to return to play in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs.

David Montgomery will save Jahmyr Gibbs

When Montgomery was injured, it appeared that Gibbs was in line to see his volume explode. While that would have given plenty of chances for big statistical jumps, it would have endangered Gibbs to run out of tread on the tires for the season.

In other words, he ran the risk of a season-ending injury. Even if it was minor, any short-term injury could tank his and by extension, the Lions’ season.

With Montgomery on deck to soak up some touches for Gibbs, he most likely will be able to play strong through the rest of the year. Montgomery logged 12 touchdowns and nearly 800 yards in 14 games this season.

Of course, the worry is that Montgomery might not be 100%, but it appears the Lions will cross that bridge when they get to it.
