49ers interview Lions assistant coach for their defensive coordinator opening

USA Today

Another Lions assistant coach is getting an opportunity to try and advance up the coaching ladder with another franchise. This time it’s with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers announced on Thursday they have completed an interview with Detroit Lions passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend for their vacant defensive coordinator spot. Townsend interviewed virtually for the opening.

Townsend is in his first season with Detroit after coaching with several other NFL teams following the end of his playing career in 2010. He earned praise for his work with rookie CB Terrion Arnold and safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.
