Recent news points to the idea that Ben Johnson has a very good chance of just staying put with the Lions, there’s just one hump to get over

I know some Detroit Lions fans just want to think about the playoffs and all that and I get it, but there are no playoffs for the Lions this week. The team has the week off and that means that the only thing that’s really happening for the Lions this week is interviews for Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.

Both have some lined up already. Glenn has four virtual interviews scheduled this week and three teams have requested interviews with Johnson. So far he’s only accepted two of them and that might be all he does this offseason according to NFL insider Albert Breer who has been all over the Ben Johnson stuff this year.

This is not your average head coaching interview type of thing where a guy will take any interview he can get. Johnson is the fish here and he’s putting it on the team to reel him this time. He’s also deciding to only bite on the bait he wants to bite.

If Johnson only winds up interviewing with two of the five teams that want a head coach, that’s huge and could signify and very good chance that the Lions wind up getting their OC back for another season.

The two teams that he is looking to interview with are the Bears and the Patriots. In terms of the things he’s reportedly looking for, the Bears don’t really qualify for any of them, but they do have Caleb Williams and that’s intriguing.

The job that does have that stuff is the Patriots. They also have Drake Maye, high draft picks, and a lot of cap space. They also offer the ability to be the leader of the next generation of this franchise now that all the Belichick is out. It’s pretty tempting. That’s the one hump to get over here.
