‘We’re gonna need him again’ Dan Campbell says the Lions still want to bring back veteran linebacker to their practice squad

The Detroit Lions had to clear some space in the linebacker room this week so that they could make room for Jalen Reeves-Maybin to come back and then make a spot for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. That meant that David Long and Kwon Alexander both had to be waived.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell explained on Saturday how hard it is to make moves like that.

“That’s the hard, cold truths of this league, and that’s the like, that’s the hard stuff, because it’s what you just said, man, you’re relying on these guys to come in and help you, and then you get some guys to get healthy, and then you got to make a move. And so no, that’s not, that’s not easy. You know, we got a lot of respect for those guys.”

Long got waived and then claimed by the Titans before failing his physical there, but Kwon Alexander went unclaimed on waivers this week and Campbell said on Saturday that the Lions would like to get him back.

“You mentioned Kwon. We just knew, of course we would love to have him on the roster. Just know what he’s about. And Well, if that’s not the case, man, can we get him back here on the vet squad in some capacity? Because I still think we’re going to need him before this is all said and done. We’re gonna need him again.”

Campbell went on to talk about how important Alexander can be off the practice squad and how much respect he has for him. Alexander could be back in Detroit as early as Saturday at 4:00 if the Lions decide to make their roster moves ahead of flying out Sunday.  Otherwise, he could be back on Sunday, too. We’ll keep you updated.

Update: Alexander has been signed to the Lions’ practice squad.
