Last year I caught a little bit of flak for saying that Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn should be the most desired Lions coordinator when it came to being a a head coach. The Lions defense wasn’t super good at the time, but the big thing for me has always been that I believe Glenn is the better leader of men and it didn’t really matter what numbers said.
Nowadays it’s mixture of both and that mixture is bubbling up more and more every week. I truly believe that last Sunday’s win over the Texans might have caused the overflow.
The Lions came out of the half down 23-7 in a game that looked eerily similar to the teams loss to the Ravens in 2023 for a minute. Per Brian Branch, Glenn simply told the defense “they get no more” and then that’s exactly what happened. The Lions defense shut down a pretty good Texans offense and the team was able to come back and win because of it.
Aaron Glenn is showing the world that he is going to be the number one coaching candidate in NFL this coming offseason because of stuff like that. Don’t take it just from me.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Wednesday morning that everyone has Glenn on the mind right now.
“Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is generating more NFL buzz than in the past. His name comes up more often in league circles than I remember, and that’s not just in relation to the Saints job, to which he has ties as a former assistant coach there. He has always had leadership traits, and now he has the proof of concept with Detroit’s surging defense.”
Glenn has become the candidate that you just can’t so no to. He’s the coordinator of a top five defense on one of the best teams in the league and he has shown to be a leader of men and also has the power of players voices on his side.
Last year the NFLPA polled every player in the league and Glenn was voted the top defensive coordinator in a landslide. He received so many votes that he was just flat out the most voted for coordinator on either side of the ball. Players love this guy.
If you’re an NFL owner or GM, this is biggest no brainer there could ever be. Players love the guy and will follow him and he’s good at his coordinator job. Plus he’s probably more open to a head coaching job than Johnson is. Sign the guy up.
