Lions make roster moves ahead of Texans game, multiple veterans making Detroit debut, captain heads to injured reserve

The Detroit Lions are heading to Houston as we speak to take on the Texans, but first they made a ton of roster moves ahead of the game. Here’s what they did:

Placed Jalen Reeves-Maybin on injure reserve

A tough blow to the Lions special teams unit. Reeves-Maybin has been the best special teams player in the NFL for a while and now the Lions will be without him for the next four games due to a neck injury. Look for some of the young guys to step up.

Waived Isaiah Thomas

This was always going to be a “we’ll see” type situation. Thomas showed some promise in Cincinnati, but never really showed much in Detroit. Look for the Lions to try to get him back on the practice squad Tuesday.

Signed Shane Zylstra to 53-man roster

Zylstra has earned this spot for sure. It’s still a bit of a shocker he didn’t make the initial 53-man roster. Lions head coach Dan Campbell talked last week about how he made it hard for the team to ignore and after three elevations, he’s on the roster now.

Signed Al-Quadin Muhammad to 53-man roster

Had a big game against the Titans, but struggled a bit against the Packers. Let’s see what he’s able to do in Houston. The Lions must feel good about him since they’re not even bothering to use his third elevation.

Signed Abraham Beauplan to 53-man roster

The Lions really liked this guy this summer. With the injuries to Malcolm Rodriguez and now Reeves-Maybin, look for this kid to get some real time to show what he can do. There’s a lot to liek with this player.

Elevated Ezekiel Turner from practice squad

Turner was signed earlier this week and now he’ll make his Lions debut on Sunday. The veteran linebacker is another guy filling in during injuries. He spent six seasons with the Cardinals before spending a bit of this year on the Texans practice squad.

Elevated Jamarco Jones from practice squad

This is an interesting one simply because we know Taylor Decker is out for this game, but we don’t know who’s going to play left tackle. We’re about to find out. It could be Dan Skipper, or maybe the Lions give the former fifth-round pick the shot.
