The Detroit Lions made themselves at home in Green Bay, clawing up the host Packers in a 24-14 road win in Week 9. It was an impressively thorough win for the Lions, who improved to 7-1 and picked up their second divisional road win in three weeks.
No pass rush, no problem. Steady rain in the cold on slick grass for a dome team, no problem. Under 250 yards of total offense, no problem. The Lions played smarter, sharper football on both sides of the ball and did a much better job overcoming adversity than the Packers, who fell to 6-3 with the loss.
Here’s everything we know in the immediate aftermath of Detroit’s impressive Week 9 win in Green Bay.
It was over when…
It turned out to be over when Kerby Joseph picked off Jordan Love’s laughably panicked throw for a pick-6 to make the score Detroit 17, Green Bay 3 in the second quarter. Didn’t necessarily feel like it at the time, however.
It was probably over when Jahmyr Gibbs capped the first drive of the second half with a 15-yard touchdown run, elevating the lead to 24-3.
It was absolutely over when David Montgomery ground out several first downs on Detroit’s final drive, crushing the Packers spirit and draining the clock.
Stat sheets
3 stars of the game
These wound up being harder to choose than normal…
1st star: Amon-Ra St. Brown – caught all 7 passes thrown his way, netting 56 yards and scoring Detroit’s first touchdown on a beautiful route and catch
2nd star: Kerby Joseph – four tackles and a pick-six that proved to be a major turning point in the game
3rd star: Jared Goff – 18-of-22 for 145 yards and a touchdown, but also zero giveaways. Two of his four incompletions were deliberate throwaways.
Honorable mentions: Jack Campbell–his best game of 2024, Carlton Davis, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and Frank Ragnow
Key points
–The Lions defense stopped the Packers offense on the first five third-down conversion attempts. Green Bay finished 3-of-12.
–Green Bay’s opening drive lasted nearly minutes. The Lions opening drive ended on the first play of the second quarter with Jared Goff’s TD pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown.
–Detroit did not commit a penalty until Brian Branch’s ejection, in which he was penalized twice for 30 yards.
–The Lions did not record a sack and had only two QB hits on the official postgame score sheet, one from Alim McNeill and the other from Alex Anzalone.
–Green Bay’s only sack came on a play where Lions All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell slipped/tripped. That was the only credited QB hit for the Packers defense in the initial postgame stat sheet.
–Isaiah Williams returned Green Bay’s final kickoff (not the onside kick attempt) 36 yards and only had one more man to beat to take it to the house.
–No Lions players appeared to suffer any long-term injuries. All players who left the field after needing attention were cleared to return to the game, including CB Carlton Davis and LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
–The Lions went 2-of-3 in the red zone, besting Green Bay’s 1-of-4. Detroit technically finished 2-of-4 on the box score because they knelt in victory formation inside Green Bay’s red zone.
What’s next for the Lions?
The 7-1 Lions head to Houston to play the 6-3 Texans on Sunday Night Football in Week 10. The AFC South-leading Texans lost to the New York Jets on Thursday night in Week 9.
