Lions sign former Colts defensive starter who has ties to Aaron Glenn and Dan Campbell and waive two players from practice squad

The Detroit Lions are back from the bye week and they’ve made some roster moves to start the week, including signing an edge rusher that once started for NFC North rivals the Chicago Bears. Here’s what they did.

Signed Al-Quadin Muhammad to practice squad

Muhammad is a former sixth round pick for the Saints in 2017. He was there with both Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn. Muhammad spent four seasons with the Colts and was their starting edge rusher in 2021. He put up six sacks that year. He started for the Bears in 2022. They released him after the season.

Muhammad return to the Colts, but was suspended by the NFL for violating the leagues performance enhancing drugs rules. He was released by the Colts and hasn’t played since.

He spent the summer with the Cowboys and he’s someone that could potentially see some elevations this season and maybe even more.

Signed linebacker Cam Gill to practice squad

Gill is a little bit younger. He went undrafted in 2020 and then won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers that year. He stayed with them until last year. He signed with the Panthers this offseason and then got injured and released.

Released kicker Matt McCrane and safety Erik Hallet

The Lions search for a practice squad kicker continues. They’ll be looking for their third option this season. Hallet is a guy I thought might have a chance to play with some of the safety injuries recently, but never got in.
