Lions dig into bag of tricks en route to beating Cardinals

Jared Goff passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns and the Detroit Lions topped the Arizona Cardinals 20-13 on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz.

Goff, who was intercepted once, completed 18 of 23 passes. David Montgomery rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries for the Lions (2-1).

Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 83 yards and scored a 21-yard touchdown on a hook-and-ladder play. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Kyler Murray passed for 207 yards and a touchdown with an interception for Arizona (1-2). Marvin Harrison Jr. caught five passes for 64 yards and a score.

Goff completed all 12 of his first-half passes as Lions grabbed a 20-10 halftime advantage.

Montgomery rushed for 39 yards on the Lions’ first possession, which he finished off with a 1-yard plunge.

Arizona responded with a 70-yard drive in which Murray passed for 38 yards and rushed for 34 more. Murray connected with Harrison on a 10-yard pass to complete the drive.

Detroit regained the lead on a 13-play drive, capped by Goff’s 5-yard pass to St. Brown. Jake Bates missed the extra-point try.

Goff nearly committed a turnover late in the half but was bailed out by the two-minute warning.

The Lions then used a little razzle-dazzle to score again with 29 seconds remaining in the half. Goff completed a short pass to St. Brown, who then tossed a lateral to Gibbs. The speedy running back raced 20 yards for the touchdown.

A personal foul penalty helped the Cardinals get into field goal range and the half ended on Matt Prater’s 42-yard field goal.

Murray was picked off in the end zone by Kerby Joseph early in the second half. Arizona also failed to pick up a first down after Goff was intercepted by Dennis Gardeck.

Arizona scored the first points of the half with 3:48 remaining on Prater’s 45-yard field goal. Murray’s 28-yard pass to Michael Wilson was the big play on the drive.

The Lions converted a key third-and-12 on Goff’s 18-yard pass to St. Brown. Goff’s 8-yard scramble picked up another first down and ended the contest.
