It’s really early in the season for the Detroit Lions. I mean it’s only Week 2, so it seems crazy to be talking about something like this so early in the year, but the circumstances are just pointing towards it and have been all summer long.
The Lions are having some issues in two big areas. One of them being the receivers, which we’ve talked about maybe too much, and the other being at edge rusher.
On the receiver end of things, we know what’s up. The Lions didn’t get receiver help this offseason and it showed up in Week 1 when their top guys got taken away and they struggled to pass the ball.
The team did sign Tim Patrick and Allen Robinson, but neither have played yet and Dan Campbell’s comments earlier this week didn’t really inspire the idea that one of them was going to come in and light it up. It also seems like they may not be moving any of them up anytime soon. Isaiah Williams injury this week could change that. We’ll see Saturday.
On the edge rusher side of things, the team has just dealt with injuries. John Cominsky got hurt during camp and he was expected to be a big part of the rotation. Marcus Davenport had a great Week 1, but the often injured player is already about to more than likely miss his first game of the year after being out with a groin injury all week.
Then there’s James Houston. He’s completely healthy, but he seems to have really fallen out of favor and Campbell had comments from earlier in the week that made it seem like he won’t active this Sunday either.
So when you take all that into account, it seems impossible that a team would just keep on trucking without looking for reinforcements and the only way to get quality ones is to make a trade.
When that will happen is another question. Is it at the deadline in November or will they make a move ahead of that. It could be the former at this point. Right now it’s a bit too early for teams to start thinking about trades. Unless you’re the Jets and you’re thinking about moving Haason Reddick. That’s something the Lions should be in on by the way.
We’ll see where things go, but it’s a bad look that Davenport is already hurt and that nobody seems to be pulling ahead in the practice squad receiver battle. Lions need to find away to get ahead of this.
