Cutdown day is finally over. We now know who made the Lions 53-man roster. Now it’s time to pontificate about it and think about what immediately struck us as we went over the roster for the first time. Here’s the four biggest takeaways:
The Lions aren’t done yet
98% of the Lions 53-man roster is set, but they left one spot open and that will soon turn into two spots when John Cominsky is added to the IR. That means the Lions need to fill two spots ahead of the season and we have some ideas as to what they might be doing. We’ll soon see if we’re right on any of them.
The cornerback room was the easiest to figure out and good feelings should be had
Every single guy in this room showed good stuff this summer and earned their spot, right down to the fifth and sixth guys. The Lions went from having a real cornerback problem to being really deep at corner. This group could do some special things in 2024 if they live up to their hype. Amik Robertson is one that might turn out to be a dawg at the nickel. Can’t wait to see if he proves that theory right.
The Lions have some things to figure out with their offensive line depth
This is the spot where the Lions kept the most guys and it feels like a mix of players that we’re just unsure of. In a perfect world you could add another tackle that makes you feel more comfortable, but that’s not something that’s really out there. Then the Lions have some guys that there’s questions about on the interior. They made sure they’re prepared with bodies incase someone gets injured, but finding out which bodies they’ll use is going to be interesting.
The Lions love linebackers
We were fully convinced that there was no way the Lions were adding anymore linebackers because it seemed like this team just had it figured out there. Then they added a sixth guy. This spot just feels stacked right now. Really solid depth.
