Lions sign former Broncos’ cornerback and waive another young player that had a solid preseason performance

The Detroit Lions made another roster move on Tuesday due to injury. The team announced that signed cornerback Essang Bassey and waived linebacker DaRon Gilbert.

Gilbert’s waiving was somewhat expected after Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell said DaRon Gilbert got hurt on Sunday and that it could be a long term injury. It’s yet another player that played pretty well in the preseason that is now no longer with the team due to injury. Gilbert joins Nate Lynn and Connor Galvin who have both suffered season ending injuries.

As for Bassey, the Lions are down Ennis Rakestraw and Terrion Arnold at this time. We don’t know what the length of those injuries is going to be, but the team is going to want to have some bodies out there on Saturday against the Chiefs and Bassey is going to get a shot to put some good tape out there.

Bassey has been in the league since 2020 and he has gone back and forth between the Chargers and the Broncos ever since. He has two stints with each team. Bassey has played in 45 regular season games and has started five of them. Four those starts coming for the Broncos and one for the Chargers last season.

He’ll have an uphill battle making the Lions 53-man roster unless he shows out in a big way on Saturday and through the rest of the summer.
