UFL Defensive Player of the Year Breeland Speaks’ top choice is to play for the Lions per source

The Detroit Lions suffered a hard loss on Tuesday when veteran edge rusher John Cominsky got rolled up on at training camp and had to be carted off the field. The prognosis is that Cominsky has a torn MCL and will be out for the season.

The Lions are already at 89 players on their 90-man roster spot. Once Cominsky is moved over to injured reserve, the Lions will be at 88. They’re more than likely going to be on the lookout for someone to come in and replace Cominsky, who was expected to be a key piece on the defensive line in 2024.

They might not have to look very far at all. There’s a guy that’s wildly available right now and he just spent this past spring playing in Ford Field. We’re talking about UFL Defensive Player of the Year Breeland Speaks.

Speaks lit up the UFL last year with 9.5 sacks in 10 games. He could not be stopped. It’s crazy that no team has made him an offer yet or extended an invitation to training camp. He has had some conversations with the Titans and Panthers, but that’s been all we’ve heard to this point.

The Lions may have to hurry. One of the teams that has had discussions with Speaks is still having discussions with him and there was a visit there this week. A deal isn’t done until the pen hits the paper though. A source tells myself and A to Z Sports that Speaks is defintley interested in playing for the Lions and that his team is trying their hardest to get him to camp there. When asked if the Lions were Speaks top choice, the source replied with this:

“Detroit for sure. He fell in love with Michigan fan base.”

Speaks does have some NFL experience. He’s a former second-round pick that helped the Chiefs win a Super Bowl in 2020. He has also spent time with the Raiders, Cowboys, Giants, Bills and 49ers.

Speaks is due for another shot in the NFL and the Lions could be that shot since they have the space for him and have a phenomenal defensive line coach in Terrell Williams. He’s someone that could mine the best out of Speaks.

We’ll see what happens, but there’s interest on one end at this time. Maybe the Lions could find some interest on their end soon.
