“What are the odds the Lions want Goff to be their quarterback in 2027? I’m not sure they are that high and the downside is significant if the team decides to move off Goff in the next year or two, like the Rams did when they sent him to Detroit,” Walder explained. “While there probably is some value in the team demonstrating faith in its quarterback, this was an awfully expensive way to do it — particularly in terms of costing future optionality on him.”
DETROIT – The Detroit Lions have secured the services of Jake Bates, a seasoned kicker from the Michigan Panthers, in a two-year deal.
In a strategic move, the Lions announced on Tuesday (June 18) that they had signed Bates to fill the much-needed position.

Head coach Dan Campbell made many tough decisions throughout the season, including going for it on fourth down or playing the field game by punting, as faith in the kicker position was put on full display.
Entering the 2024 offseason, the Detroit Lions were thought to be in the market for a wide receiver, and that was especially true after Josh Reynolds left for the Denver Broncos in free agency.
However, general manager Brad Holmes didn’t make any big moves at the position and instead the Lions will hope the guys they already have can step up, including Jameson Williams, who is a question mark after a disappointing start to his career.
If the Lions aren’t content with their situation, one NFL analyst, Brett Kollman, has an idea: the Lions trade Williams and a draft pick to the San Francisco 49ers for Brandon Aiyuk, who is currently on his fifth-year option and looking for an extension.
