Detroit Lions News: Brandon Joseph SHINES, Cam Sutton Signs With Steelers + Lions Minicamp

ALLEN PARK — Cam Sutton is getting a second chance with the first team that gave him a chance, agreeing to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers according to NFL Network.

Sutton rose to prominence during a six-year run in Pittsburgh, then cashed in by signing a three-year, $33 million deal with the Detroit Lions last offseason. He was supposed to be the cornerstone of the rebuild in the secondary, but instead proved to be part of the problem. He ranked among the worst cornerbacks in the league down the stretch, and allowed a QB rating of 120 for the season.

With every season that passes, the Detroit Lions roster adds more and more depth, making it a real bloodbath competition for the final few spots on the roster. Each year, the Lions carry a handful of players on their roster—both active and practice squad—who have the skills to contribute at an NFL level but their game isn’t quite polished enough for them to be active on game day.

Last season, safety Brandon Joseph (an undrafted free agent) and wide receiver Antoine Green (a seventh-round pick) found themselves in situations where they needed more time to round out their games. Despite not being part of the team’s game day plans, the Lions utilized their skills on the scout team, hoping to hone their skills to a point where they could contribute with time.

Both Joseph and Green developed enough during their rookie seasons that they were on the fringe of being contributors, but with the team amid a playoff run, it was difficult to get them into the rotation.

Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers may both now be gone from the NFC North, but that doesn’t mean we can’t drum up some old feelings on the two. And thanks to a pretty bold proclamation from Texans young quarterback C.J. Stroud, an old debate has been sparked across the NFL landscape.

Save some of the money for in-season transactions
This is something they actually will do no matter what. Every team likes to keep about $10 million free to make moves during the season. Whether that’s signing players to the practice squad or making trades during the trade deadline, it’s good to have some money set aside. You never know what you’ll need in November.

ALLEN PARK — Giovanni Manu’s presence on a football field filled with very strong and large players everywhere one can look is impossible to miss. The 6-foot-7, 354-pound rookie O-lineman towers over most of his teammates while making professional athletes look small.
