Lions Mailbag: James Houston BREAKOUT? Lions vs.49ers BIG GAME + Frank Ragnow + Dan Campbell

Since the days of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell has captured football fan’s hearts around the world. Now, after a successful 2023 season, more people are looking for a spot on the bandwagon.

Beyond fans, analysts and football pundits have taken notice for a while now, which is a stark contrast to the way Campbell was viewed earlier in his Lions’ tenure. And while I feel like ESPN’s Mina Kimes has been on the Lions’ bandwagon for a bit now, it’s still cool to see her have Campbell as the seventh-ranked coach in the NFL headed into the 2024 season.

“I love Dan Campbell,” said Kimes on her podcast The Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny. “I love the way he talks about football, I love his aggression. I love the way after—you could argue he was too aggressive at times. During the season there was the infamous ‘didn’t report’ incident. I loved that he was entirely unapologetic about it. I loved that he said, ‘This is our identity. We’ve stuck to it. We’re not deviating.’ He, to me, is the definition of culture in every sense, and not just the soft stuff, but also in approaches to how he manages games.”

She also weighed in on Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s decision to stay in Detroit.

“You don’t go back unless you like your boss, and I do think it speaks to the fact that it seems like everyone genuinely loves working for this man. Offensive coordinators like Ben Johnson have enormous egos, and the fact that he (Campbell) is able to manage him and retain him I do think speaks volumes about his skills as a manager.”

The whole podcast is full of good content from Kimes and her guest Kevin Clark, and while we as Lions fans certainly appreciate the love, I will say I think Mina has Campbell a bit too low for my liking.

You should watch the entire thing for a nice breakdown of each coach, including Campbell. But here are Kimes’ top seven:

Andy Reid
Kyle Shanahan
John Harbaugh
Mike Tomlin
Sean McVay
Matt LaFleur
Dan Campbell
