Tracking the social media reaction to the Lions drafting Missouri CB Ennis Rakestraw

The Detroit Lions pulled something of a surprise in selecting Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw with the 61st overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft. It’s not that Rakestraw was an unknown prospect; he was one of the most commonly projected players to Detroit in the early portion of the offseason.

Yet after taking Alabama CB Terrion Arnold in the first round, few expected the Lions would go back and take another outside cornerback with their very next pick. The selection has made for an interesting reaction across social media.

Ennis Rakestraw, much like Terrion Arnold, fits what the Lions love out of their cornerbacks. He’s versatile enough to play inside or outside, loves being left alone on an island and is an aggressive run defender. Lions double up at corner and replenish the position.

Rakestraw didn’t run fast. And that’s about it for his weaknesses. Dude played in a coverage diverse scheme – press man, off man, deep third, flats – he did it all. Elite tackler, great vs run. Doesn’t have a ton of ball production bc he blanketed everyone. His tape is fire.

I’m totally fine with doubling up at CB. Both players play with aggressiveness and definitely fit what we envisioned Holmes would want.

Would really like to know the GPS speed of both Arnold and Rakestraw though. Neither have great top-end speed, which does give me pause.…

I was one to say that I didn’t like Rakestraw tbh but that was mainly predicated around him being our CB1. Could be a great CB2 in 2-3 years.
