Detroit Lions, Jared Goff Extension Update, Revealed

The Detroit Lions just signed wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell to significant contract extensions, and quarterback Jared Goff could be next.

It just might take some time.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions and Goff have spoken about a new deal, but nothing is imminent right now. He adds that nothing is close between the two sides.

Goff is preparing to enter the final year of his contract and is slated to earn $22.3 million in base salary in 2024.

The 29-year-old is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played every game and threw for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 97.9.

Goff led the Lions to their first division title since 1993 and also guided the franchise to its first playoff win since January 1992. Detroit made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game, where it ultimately blew a 24-7 lead against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Novato, Ca. native, who played his collegiate football at the University of California, was originally selected by the Los Angeles Rams with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He spent the first five years of his career with the Rams, making a couple of Pro Bowls and leading Los Angeles to a Super Bowl appearance. However, Goff’s last couple of years in LA were underwhelming, and the Rams ended up trading him to the Lions for Matthew Stafford in March 2021.

Goff has revitalized his career in the Motor City, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl during his second season with the Lions before achieving what he did in 2023.

We’ll see if Detroit and Jared Goff are able to make any progress on a new deal as the offseason progresses.
