On Friday, it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers had made an offer to Detroit Lions restricted free-agent tight end Brock Wright. On Saturday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the latest details of the offer. Schefter wrote, “49ers signed Lions restricted free-agent TE Brock Wright to a three-year, $12 million offer sheet that includes $6 million guaranteed, per source. Detroit tendered Wright with a one-year, $2.985 million offer, and now has five days to determine whether to match San Francisco’s offer sheet or lose its TE without getting back any compensation.”
Wright is a three-year pro who has started 19 games for the Lions. He has 43 career catches, 424 yards, and seven touchdowns. He would be an upgrade over Charlie Woener, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons, in the passing game, for certain. But Wright is also a good blocker, though perhaps not as effective as Woerner. And with Wright on board, the 49ers wouldn’t have to rely on second-year tight ends Cam Latu or Brayden Willis, as they continue their development.
Reportedly, the Lions are high on Wright and have a lot of faith in him. If that’s the case, it would stand to reason they would match the 49ers offer. But Matt Maiocco, of NBC Sports Bay Area, wrote, “The 49ers would not have executed this offer sheet for RFA TE Brock Wright if they felt the Lions were going to match. No team wants to negotiate a contract for another team. The deadline for Detroit to match is Wednesday, April 3.”
