A Detroit Lions pass-rusher who initially joined the league with the New York Giants has announced his retirement. The decision comes during an offseason when the Lions look like they have a chance to be Super Bowl contenders.

Per a statement by Okwara on his Instagram, the 28-year-old is stepping away from the league:

“After some introspection and meditation I have decided to step away from the NFL.

“The game of football has been the largest part of my life for the greater of 18 years, 8 of which I have been fortunate enough to play at the professional level. 4 of those with my brother.

️ “he experiences, friendships, and camaraderie I have been lucky enough to share with my teammates, coaches, and peers is something I will forever be grateful for. You all mean the world to me and I will continue to cheer you on for the rest of our lives!

“[Lions] organization – THANK YOU for giving this young kid a chance 6 years ago after coming into the league as a Free Agent. My heart is forever with you and the city of Detroit.

“I am excited for what’s next as I navigate this crazy transition away from the game.”

Okwara played for Notre Dame in college. The New York Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft. He played with the Giants for two seasons before signing with the Lions in September 2018.

Okwara started 32 games and played in 92 contests over his eight-year NFL career. During that span, he recorded 162 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and 25 sacks.
